So, What is Self-Confidence?
Self-confidence is a psychological and social idea based on your assuredness and belief in your own abilities, judgment, and the power to achieve your goals and accomplish tasks. It is your faith in your ability to handle life regardless of what it throws at you. Self-confidence is commonly confused with courage and although they are similar concepts, they are not exactly the same thing. However, your path toward learning how to be confident might encompass elements of courage as well as elements of your self-esteem. Courage assists you in building confidence because it deals with facing your fears whereas confidence itself might represent experiencing a lesser degree of fear to begin with. As you begin the confidence building process and discover how to be confident, you will also develop greater courage along the way.
Self-esteem on the other hand, describes the magnitude with which you are able to view yourself in a favorable way. In short, self-esteem might be described more simply as “how much you like yourself or self-love.” Self-esteem makes up a significant part of your self-confidence as well. Although not quite the same, we sometimes use the terms, “self confidence” and “self esteem” interchangeably. As you learn how to be confident in life, you will certainly involve elements of courage and self-esteem at the same time. These concepts will always go hand in hand.
Why learn how to be confident?
Confidence building is important to all of us. Your level of self-confidence can and usually will, have a very significant impact on your life. Your ability to be confident affects nearly everything you do in some way because it is deeply rooted in your psychological makeup and it determines the way you perceive yourself and react to your environment. It greatly affects not only the way you view yourself but also the way others view you, the relationships you form, the decisions you make and the actions you take throughout your life. For these reasons, it is of paramount importance to make every effort to learn how to build confidence.
The Problem: Lack of Self-Confidence
In most cases, fear causes your lack of self-confidence. These fears may include failure, ridicule, rejection, disrespect etc. and they will not allow you to be confident. When you do not confront and overcome these fears on a regular basis, they tend to hang around. They lurk just below the surface of your conscious awareness and eat away at your ability to function at higher capacity. Confidence building allows us to begin overcoming these fears.
These persistent fears or this “lack of confidence” begins to manifest itself in many visible and undesirable ways in your life. Some of the more noticeable problems might include:
- Getting passed over for a promotion
- Inability to confront people who cause problems for you
- Paralysis in the area of meeting members of the opposite sex
- Unable to address or speak in front of large or small groups
- Excessive indecision
- Poor leadership
- Nervousness during job interviews
- Depression
As you probably guessed, confidence building can be important for many other reasons as well.
Many of these problems above can lead to failures or events in life that you perceive as failures. These perceived failures work to bring your self-confidence and self-esteem even lower. The resulting effects can sometimes escalate into a downward spiral of degradation of self image in some cases. If this happens, they can also eventually progress toward other serious problems such as depression if you do not deal with them adequately. The problems are not always quite that serious of course but they can be none-the-less problematic in many areas of life.
We all want to succeed, we want to be capable, powerful and free to progress toward our goals unhindered by the setbacks and dragging weights of low self-confidence or self-esteem. We want and need to be confident. These are the reasons why confidence building is such a worthwhile process. Thankfully, learning how to be confident is not as complex as you might think.
Why do I have Low Confidence?
If you feel that you may be experiencing some form of low self-confidence, you are not alone. In fact, you are in very good company. This is a huge problem. It affects millions of people worldwide. The simple fact that you are finding out about confidence building techniques already puts you well ahead of the masses. Many people will not ever recognize the problem properly let alone begin to actively seek help.
The reasons for low self-confidence and self-esteem are as varied and complex as the people who experience the problems. The problems can stem from social experiences in your childhood, experiences with the opposite sex during high school or other stages in life, how you were raised, previous abuse, guilt or a myriad of other equally imposing past experiences. Whatever the cause, just know that it can be corrected. Learning about building confidence is not rocket science and the processes are not at all complex. It just takes some information and some persistent effort on your part.
One major reason that is largely responsible for low self-confidence in society is a simple lack of information. Most of us are unaware of the progress that professionals have made to understand and correct these issues over the last several decades. Unfortunately, today’s society does not adequately train teachers to properly teach children how to be confident in early levels of their development. Additionally, society seems to take a “let nature take its course” approach. Psychiatrists have been studying and teaching these ideas for years but only to the few who have come forward seeking help and can afford it financially. Most parents are not adequately educated to recognized and correct these issues in their children during childhood. The result is that regularly learning how to be confident is not a major focus in our daily routines or lifestyles. To sum up the issue, I’ll state that as a society, we are simply uneducated about maintaining our own self-confidence and self-esteem. Confidence building is simply not a regular part of our lives.
