Leadership Styles in Management There are a number of various leadership styles in management that are relied upon by today’s corporations. When we think of leadership styles, we generally think of the big 4. That is, the most popular styles of leadership being autocratic, democratic, bureaucratic, and laissez-faire. In most management scenarios you will not generally find leaders who strictly follow one style to the letter but actually show leadership traits and qualities from more than one of these categories mixed in various degrees based on their own skills, background and personality. So leadership styles in management are not quite as simple as just categorizing the different popular leadership styles according to traditional leadership theories. Leadership Styles In Management Rely On A Combination Of Leadership Influences Leadership styles for management applications will typically pull various points and attitudes from the following general leadership style categories: Autocratic leadership – Think dictatorship. The Autocratic leadership style is leadership that is centered on the concept of complete control. In this type of leadership, those in power exert full control over those below them. Historically, we have seen societies where governments led with complete control in this manner. In today’s corporate world, this would [...]

Acetaminophen and Alcohol I’ve always heard it mentioned by various armchair physicians that using acetaminophen and alcohol is bad for your liver. Being the skeptic that I am, I wanted some confirmation of this little factoid. Its not that I didn’t believe it. I’ve heard it come up enough times to suggest there is certainly something there. I just wanted a clearer, more accurate understanding of why it is so. So naturally, I researched it for myself. Acetaminophen is a non-aspirin based analgesic (pain killer) found most often in products like Tylenol. The directions for proper use clearly state that it is not to be consumed with alcohol. It seems that this was widely attributed to the simple facts that both alcohol and acetaminophen can cause liver damage and other health problems if abused. Is Acetaminophen with Alcohol really Dangerous? The question of whether or not using acetaminophen and alcohol together represents a significant increased danger to liver, kidneys or other vital organs remain debated, but there is evidence to suggest enough risk that it would certainly be wise to avoid the combination. Especially when you consider that there are other widely available pain medications that are not shown to [...]

What Is Bipolar Type 2? Bipolar Type 2 also known as Bipolar II disorder is a mental affliction or disorder that is quite similar to a more commonly known mental illness known as bipolar disorder or bipolar I. These disorders center on the concept that moods in the brain are not maintained as evenly as they may be in a normal test group. The variations in the moods are more erratic and more intense. People with bipolar disorders experience higher highs and lower lows. Additionally, the transition between them is more frequent and not necessarily based on external stimulus. Visualize a sine wave where the oscillating line varies only slightly above and below the center line in long gradual slopes. That would represent normal mood variations. In people with bipolar disorder, the rises and troughs in the oscillating line would be more frequent and would travel much further from center producing steeper slopes. In the no-so-perfect image below the blue line would represent a scenario closer to normal than the red line although the height of the slope should not be as high or as far from center as it is shown here. This is just a generic example. A [...]

Psychiatry vs. psychology In short, psychiatrists prescribe medications to treat specific psychological illnesses while psychologists do not prescribe medications but still help patients through various forms of therapy while their focus is more on the study of psychological matters. If you want an even shorter answer, psychiatrists are doctors and psychologists are essentially researchers or scientists but both fields can engage in either of these activities. The real answer of course is significantly more complex. There are a lot of similarities between the two fields and also some significant differences. For instance, both professions study psychology, help patients experiencing related psychological problems and both professions have a focus on researching and innovating in the field. Psychology and Psychiatry, Education and Training Like all other types of medical doctors. Psychiatrists will first attend medical school and then apply for and join residency programs which will last for 4 years. This residency period is basically the medical equivalent of on-the-job training during which they will work grueling hours for compensation that is comparatively low for the medical professions. In these programs, psychiatrists will choose their specialties and develop skills according to the areas that they have chosen. Once they complete [...]

Managerial Soft Skills In every management professional, there is a need for managers to possess soft skills. In terms of the management profession and leadership as a whole, there are many debates about what these things are and the manner of how they must be measured. Let us first take a look at some typical soft skills so that we can classify and define them. Soft Skills, What Are They? Soft skills are those traits and personal attributes that back our abilities to socialize and communicate well. They include things like: Personality Communication Relationship Skills Demeanor Social Skill Ability to Handle Stress Self Confidence Attitude These skills compliment our hard skillset which is the set of abilities related to performing specific roles or occupational tasks. In business, it has become a popular concept that many hard skills can be better learned and in time, performed well by people who possess strong soft skills.
