Melancholic depression is just like any other form of major depression or “major depressive disorder” in that it caries along with it the main symptoms and characteristics of other classifications of major depression. More specifically, melancholic depression also includes a focus on inability to take pleasure in activities or circumstances that would normally be considered positive. Sufferers may also experience extreme weight loss, feelings of lethargy, inability to sleep (insomnia), or varied or abnormal diurnal patterns. Diurnal patterns refer to the periods during the day when we habitually sleep or become more active, aware and productive.
